Films on show for the opening night of:
Cynthia Connolly & Pat Graham's photoshow.
28th November 1998 @ Institute of Contemporary Art.
"Blue is Beautiful" (1997) 30 min 16mm color This cinematic voyage with DC musicians
Make Up uses exile as it's metaphorical
vehicle. James Schneider accompanied the "band in exile" during winter 1997;
in Blue is Beautiful, Make Up puts to musical verse possible futures and imagined
pasts, active as a Greek Chorus. Throughout the film, actual and fictional events
mix with live performances to provide a surreal vision of a seldom seen world.
With an emphasis on atmosphere, filmmaker James Schneider has created a body
of films which employ dense soundtracks and lyrical imagery. With previous films
such a Oasis, which explores a Las Vagas community using members of the lounge
band Combustible Edison, he has developed a stylized approach to impart his
surreal subject matter. In addition to festival touring, Schneider screens regularly
at film schools. His celluloid essay on Euro-Disney "Faerie Monition" was used
for a "Disnification" course at Brown University. He also edits Kino Gun, a
newsletter for the Monadic Institute, curates experimental films series', and
writes and researches for the National Gallery film program.
