Lead man Calvin Johnson is the founder of K Records, a member of the
Halo Benders, as well as a former member
of the seminal Beat Happening.
1996 has seen another tour of the US and the release of a remix EP
featuring Lois. You can expect a new full length some time in '97.
The rest of the band, Larry Butler, Todd Ranslow, and Brian Weber are
all members of hip-hop group Dead Presidents, who have a release on
K Records. Dub Narcotic Sound System reworked John Spencer Blues
Explosion's "Soul Typecast" for their remix EP, joining the ranks of
other reconstructionists Mike D., Beck, The Genius
and Moby.
Dub Narcotic Sound System is a house band of the Stax/Volt variety, and
accordingly features a number of revolving key instrumentalists.
Memebers of The Spinanes, Tiger Trap, Kicking Giant,
The Teamsters, and Wandering Lucy have all done a stint.
They barnstormed the USA in the summer of '95, playing shows with Make-Up, Milkmoney and Action
Patrol to name a few.
Between '94 and '95, Dub Narcotic Sound System released a series of five
limited edition 45's -- wowing DJ's, showgirls, punk rock shockers, cub
scouts, and purveyers of fine rump shakery everywhere. These were
followed by the fine 5 song "Industrial Breakdown" 12" and CD and the
"Rhythm Record Vol. 1" full length LP.
