Glow Worm

Glo-Worm were born to be on K Records. Although this compilation consists of releases on a slew of labels, it is fitting that Glo-Worm end their short history on K. In the vein of Lois, Softies, Talulah Gosh and Heavenly, Glo-Worm sing bittersweet candy-coated melodies with minimal instrumentation to get in the way of angelic vocals. Pam Berry (Belmondo, Black Tambourine, Shapiros and guest vocalist for Veronica Lake) weaves perfect pop melodies of love won and lost with aching simplicity.

The appeal of Pam's voice is most evident on the cover versions. The Cure's "Friday I'm in Love" is so poignant, the original version pales in comparison. The oft-covered "Downtown" that our parents cherished decades ago is transformed into an ethereal wonder. A better version of this has yet to be found.

Subtle reverb lends to the uniqueness of Glo-Worm's sound. The effect adds to the sweetness and irrestability of the recordings. Her voice surrounds the listener completely like a fuzzy warm pink blanket on a cold snowy winter day, while the guitars, percussion brushes and the occasional violin lull one into a blissful, dreamlike state.
