Grenadine are a slippery bunch...Just when you think it's safe to
call them a "lounge" band they do a 180 degree turn and before you can say
"Tip Toe Through the Tulips" they jitterbug out of the lounge and into the
speakeasy and vaudevillian theater. Yeah we know it isn't really "20's music"
but it is music with a distinct 20's flavor. A pleasing show of tap dancing,
joke telling, coconut welding pop. And of course there's a couple of heart
stopping ballads spread out across the top of the upright piano for the die
hard romantics in the balcony.
All three Grenadine members have long been fixtures in the independent
music scene. Jenny Toomey has played in about a half dozen bands in DC and Olympia
including Geek, Slack, My New Boyfriend, the short-lived acoustic duo Choke,
Tsunami and most recently Liquorice. Mark Robinson also has a trail of bands
behind him, most notably the power pop trio Unrest and his current band Air
Miami. Rob Christiansen is best known for his guitar/trombone playing role in
the band Eggs (Teenbeat) and now in Viva Satellite.
The first two Grenadine records - the Triology 7" and Goya CD/LP - were
recorded on 24-track 2 inch. One year later they entered the studio again,
this time to record the Don't Forget the Halo 7" - this time they used
16-track 1/2 inch. The two latest gems were produced on 8- track ADAT. With
this history you'd guess they'd be planning to record the next one on a tape
player in their living room. But don't be fooled. This is the best sounding
record they've ever recorded. Jenny and Mark (and Rob for one song) take
turns at the microphone, resulting in some tracks with their trademarked
"melancholic" ballads and some new songs that swing like 78s you might find
in your grandparents' attic.
While Grenadine will probably find time in their busy schedules to record
again, live shows are a rarity. But if you do catch one, what a treat.
Dressed in red velvet and tuxedo jackets, Grenadine pours on the charm
and swings along with melodies that'll make your heart melt. Watch for
more Grenadine in the future!
