In 1987, after having been broken up for a year, the 4 members of Rites of
Spring regrouped under the new name Happy Go Licky,
exclusively
playing all new material.
Prior to this, Guy, Eddie and Brendan had been playing
with Mike Hampton in One Last
Wish, who only released one song officially
on the Dischord benefit sampler "State of the Union".
Happy Go Licky only
played 7 shows while they were together (3 at d.c.space, 3 at the 9:30
club, one at Food For Thought),all in Washington,D.C. Their final show was
on New Year's Day 1988 and they broke up soon thereafter. Happy Go
Licky
released a 6 song live 12" on Peterbilt records in 1988. Though this vinyl
12" is no longer in print, those 6 songs plus 15 others have been
re-issued on a complilation CD on
Dischord/Peterbilt called "Will Play".
It contains every song the band ever performed, most recorded live, some
in multiple versions.
During the latter part of Happy Go Licky's existence
Brendan began sitting in with Ian MacKaye and Joe Lally in what was to
become Fugazi. With
Fugazi playing their first few shows as a 3 piece
starting in September of 1987, for awhile Brendan was doing double duty in
both bands. After Happy Go Licky's split in early 1988 Guy soon
joined
Brendan in Fugazi. Mike Fellows went on to play with Alexis
Fleisig, Johnny
Temple and Scott McCloud (ex-members of Soulside and soon to be
Girls Against Boys)
in a band called Little Baby in 1990-1991. Later on he
played in the groups Getaway Car, Royal Trux and Air
Miami. Most recently
he can be heard playing bass with the Silver Jews.
