With her second album Jessica Bailiff has expanded and defined the ravishing sound that typified her Even In Silence debut. Like her first album, Hour Of The Trace was recorded at Low's 20 Below studio in Duluth, Minneappolis with the band's Alan Sparhawk recording and producing. All instruments were played by Jessica Bailiff and Alan Sparhawk with guest appearances by Mimi Parker (also of Low) : drumming on "Tosca" and sharing backing vocals on "Crush". Hour Of The Trace can entrance with Jessica's delicate and alluring vocals, overwhelm with waves of guitar feedback, submerge in slow rhythms, evoke country evenings gathered around the old pump organ or puzzle with a clackety-clack like an old kinetoscope. It is not only an incredible personal statement from Jessica Bailiff but a work that demands complete immersion from the listener. Unlike so many post-rockers content to coast on a few effect pedals, Jessica Bailiff combines serious sonic research with fully realised songwriting. It's the familiar aspects of the pop song and Jessica's beautiful vocals that lure the listener in. Jessica Bailiff played a number of live shows in 1998, touring the USA with Low. More live performances are being planned to support the new album and the Star Star Stereo label of Milwaukee, Wisconsin will be releasing a split single featuring Jessica as well. |
