Taking the ribs from the stiffening corpse of post punk (?!!) and kicking the bedraggled ass of rock and roll, Kepone move forward. They flesh the whole thing out with such far flung influences as store-front gospel, Appalachian spirituals, and Goddamn ZZ Top. This band simply rocks. And if you need more than that, Kepone has songs with depth and meaning, songwriting skills, and musicianship. Everything but hairdos.
Formed in the miserable Richmond, Virginia summer of 1992, this triumvirate has as rich and strange a personal history as the city that spawned them. Micheal Bishop, the 54-Portly bassist and vocalist of the band was once a child preacher. He whales, It's Fat-Tastic! Love to watch him strut! Tim Harriss plays guitar and sings. Otherwise known as "Truth in Advertising" or "The Coal Miners Daughter", he has the stupefying history of playing Roots Reggae and African music. Tim was also a member of Richmond's legendary and influential noise-punk trio Hoi Polloi. On the skins, there's Edward Jefferson Trask, the drunken bachelor with nary a hope to wed. He puts the muscle in musician. Chances are he can beat your ass without breaking a sweat. He spent some time banging with Dischord's Holy Rollers. Oooohhh!! He's solid as a rock.
Kepone uses every tool a three-piece has to offer to show you how music
affects their lives and how it makes them feel. Whether it's the
Appalachian porch-twang of "Scrub", or the spiritual harmonic of "Leave
Your Bones", or even the all out rock of "Virginia Creeper", They extract
the rock like Alchemists and use anything that moves them as a vehicle of
their own expression. With powerful syncopated grooves and gorgeous vocal
harmonies, Kepone are righteous. They are one of the best live bands
you'll ever see. Check it out.
