Now signed to Ipecac, Mouse On Mars have continued to explore new horizons and offered up an addictive blend of whacked-out free jazz and cocaine-fried booty funk in Varcharz, an album which hyperactively flits between crunching beats, anarchic rock interpretations and spatters of fuzzed-up basslines. Always on the move, in Varcharz the duo have transcended even their own previous work to produce something almost sublime in its ephemerality and transience. Barcode wrote of the record that “the rulebook's been torn up and thrown out of the window completely... in come busily programmed, IDM-style electronics raging with intense perversity... and a bruising and explosive rock aesthetic.” It's testament to the breadth of Mouse On Mars' vision that a band who have consistently defined themselves through change are still able to renew themselves and find a new mode of expression; in Varcharz they show themselves to be as pulsing with imagination and life as ever.
