The National are a band of five
displaced Ohioans living in New York: Scott and Bryan Devendorf
(guitar & drums); Aaron and Bryce Dessner (bass & guitar);
and Matt Berninger (vocals)--two sets of brothers and one best friend.
They play smart, naked, and bracing rock music.
Their debut self-titled album was released in the United States
in 2001, and had its European debut in October 2002, to much critical
acclaim. Kerrang! wrote "Sad, affecting and drunkenly formed,
the National's debut is the stuff underground legends are made
of". They followed the release with a very successful European
tour in December 2002.
They are back with their second full length album 'Sad
Songs for Dirty Lovers' available on vinyl format on Brassland Records.
The album was recorded at various locations throughout New York.
These included recording with Nick Lloyd at Seven Studios, and
Excello in Brooklyn, overdubs in the penthouse of the Puck Building,
two local buildings in and around New Haven (note: the crickets
on "Sugar Wife" are aleatoric), Headgear studio in
Brooklyn, Bryan's basement, mixing and recording more with Peter
Katis (Interpol) and finally Tarquin Studios in Fairfield, Connecticut.
They also had additional musicians on hand: label friends Clogs
with Padma Newsome and his vampire opera of strings, Nick Lloyd's
keyboards and calm center, Nate Martinez's slow hand, and "Steve" on
mellophone and French horn. |
