rex

Curtis Harvey (Vocals/Guitar) Phil Spirito (Bass) Doug Scharin (Drums)

"rex is a worthy inheritor of the Velvet Underground's chamber-rock legacy...rex creates a mesmerizing atmosphere...the instruments curl lazily around each other like smoke rings."

- Chicago Reader

Phil, Doug and Curtis began playing together in Maine during the early 90s. However, circumstances soon arose which put their musical endeavour on hold. In 1994, Curtis and Doug both relocated to Brooklyn and after a bit of coaxing, persuaded Phil to leave Maine and move to New York. Upon Phil's arrival, the trio began playing again and rex was born.

3 is the follow up to last year's hugely successful C, an album which garnered rex critical acclaim in such publications as Billboard and Alternative Press.
The record is their third full length in two and a half years.
In that time, they've also released two seven inches (one on Southern and one on Bubble Core Records) and a 10"/CD EP, Waltz.

Melding the epic grandeur of C with the lilting pace of the Waltz EP, rex achieves a stylistic synthesis on 3 that is perhaps best described as the ghost of Hank Williams haunting three Brooklynites who've been raised on a steady diet of the "post-rock" canon.

rex has spent the better part of the past two years on the road, touring with bands such as The Sea and Cake, Sebadoh, and June of '44.
rex will again be headed out for an extensive US and European tour this fall in support of 3.
Julia Liu, who played viola on both C and the new record, will be accompanying the band on tour as well.

Brian Deck (Red Red Meat) and Bundy K. Brown (Tortoise, Gastr Del Sol), who recorded C at Idful studios in Chicago, were once again enlisted to engineer 3. This time however, Deck and Brown were imported to Brooklyn and conducted the sessions at Excello Studios.

In addition, rex and Red Red Meat got together in August of '96 to record a full length (going by the name of Loftus) to be released sometime this year on A&M Records. Also, when rex finds a spare moment, Doug masterminds the sound experiment HIM, while Phil and Curtis add to the mixture.
HIM has two releases on Southern Records, a full length entitled Egg and 12" called Chill and Peel, as well as a 12" on Soul Static Sound Records.
