spirit caravan

Scott "Wino" Weinrich has been putting his soul on the line for nearly two decades with his unique brand of Sabbath-inspired Doom / Stoner rock. He formed the hugely influential The Obsessed whilst still in high school and went on to play in the legendary Saint Vitus.

Now, after years in the wilderness, Wino is back with a stronger, tighter band than ever before, and a clutch of songs that once again prove there is no other songwriter like him in the metal/rock world. It also confirms why Wino is revered and cited as a major influence by such artists as Henry Rollins, Fugazi, The Melvins, Pantera, White Zombie, Metallica, L7, Corrosion Of Conformity, Cathedral, Life Of Agony, Prong, Foo Fighters...

Spirit Caravan began life in late 1996 as Shine, playing in the Maryland area, when half of the setlist consisted of Obsessed and St Vitus songs and the band were still working up new material. Shine released a single on Tolotta Records in late 1997. Since then they have been forced to change their name due to a clash with another band. In 1999 Spirit Caravan released their first full-length record on Tolotta Records, Jug Fulla Sun, and in 2001 the follow up, Elusive Truth.

The music itself is a healthy, uplifting mix of all the best bits of all the best rock bands from the past (Sabbath, Motorhead, Cream, Grand Funk Railroad, MC5, Blue Cheer, Mountain, The Groundhogs) with a down to earth attitude and lyricism earned by years of paying dues in the punk and metal underground.† The increasingly popular genre now known as "Stoner" rock (examples : Fu Manchu, Kyuss, Nebula, Orange Goblin, Monster Magnet, Cathedral) and labels such as Man's Ruin and Rise Above simply would not exist were it not for the groundwork laid down by Wino.

"So Mortal Be" and "Undone Mind" were recorded at Phase Studios in Colllege Park, Maryland in November 2001. It was the first time that the band had used this studio and they considered this recording to be the finest they have made. They have already returned to Phase Studios for initial sessions of a new album. They plan to complete the rest of the album by in April and hope to release it in October 2002.

Tolotta Records is a label run by Joe Lally, bass player of Fugazi, and fan of Wino's music since 1980.
