biography
Sweep The Leg Johnny is a rock and roll band that sounds like Sweep The Leg Johnny. For a moment, let's lose the metaphors and comparison. Sweep is a rock and roll band that tours incessantly and composes intricate songs that develop themes and melodies over time.
With the addition of Mitch Cheney (ex-Rumah Sakit), there are now two guitars that toy with one another, coaxing each other with fluid, yet precise lines that eventually meet at massive rhythms and walls of sound.
There is a saxophone that appears and disappears; introducing playful parts that dissolve into colorful backdrops, as well as two voices that add definition--melodically and subtlety.
There is a drum kit and bass guitar which lock into linear and deep foundations, creating a backbone that is relentless despite the tension of the band's moving parts.
Together Sweep insists on compositions that are shared, moving forward with each instrument in mind. The result is extremely unique.
Middle-aged sound men believe Sweep listens to King Crimson. Eastern European punks call Sweep the new hardcore. Hippies dance, the Brits freak out and the Indie kids over-analyze while their toes tap. Sweep smile, shrug, drink beer and rip through another fierce set, one of 725 since 1996.
"Going Down Swingin'" is Sweep's fourth lp. Dynamically, it has the power and the tightness of their live show and diligent touring, while touching moments of patience and delicacy. The album hinges on two 15 minute pieces that move effortlessly within themselves and among the diversity of the other tracks. It is engaging from start to finish, but most importantly, like many great records, IT SIMPLY ROCKS!
