What Has Become of the Nation of Ulysses?

Before I begin to explore the frightening and dangerous exploits of the ex-members of the Nation of Ulysses, it must first be recognized that this term (i.e. ex-member) is used loosely and only as a matter of conveniance. Once a person has emersed himself in the culture of the Nation, no series of words or actions can again seperate them from the all-consuming entity that is Ulysses. Though the physical grouping that was referred to as the Nation of Ulysses is now dissolute, the spirit of the Nation lives on in all of its members. We continue:

In the wake of the sudden and mysterious break-up of the Nation of Ulysses (rumored to have had something to do with a member begetting a child), former members Steve Gamboa, James Canty and Ian Svenonius (aka The Sassiest Boy in America) along with Nation sympathizer Kim Thompson, formed the Cupid Car Club, M.P., a band with a similar ironical and revolutionary stance. The Club released one 7" on Kill Rock Stars.

The same trio of former Nation nomads have performed together with several lineups and names, including The T.A.M.I. Show. They have apparently been reborn as Make-Up, with bassist Michelle Mae and have released two split 7"s, one with the Meta-Matics on their own Black Gemini label and the other with Slant 6 on the Japanese label Time Bomb. A new 7" on K Records should be out soon. Southern Studios maintains an info page, including tour information, for them.

Former Nation member Tim A. Green has also kept himself busy. He recorded a 7" with the Young Ginns for Gravity Records and a CD with The Fakes for Chainsaw. He is also credited with "infra- red guitars" on the Kicking Giant "Alien" LP and recently released a 7" entitled "Red Eye" with Sharon Cheslow on Dischord/Decomposition.
Due to his tireless work within the subversive underground music community, he has been targeted by the FBI's CoIntelPro program and has had to assume the cover of a K Records employee. Details are hazy.
