Volt

The town of Chemnitz in Saxony, Germany, may have the lowest birth rate in the world but, if Volt are anything to go by, the town has more than compensated for that by the sheer power of some of the residents; an old-fashioned chugging noise outfit, Volt take their cues from The Jesus Lizard and Melvins but twist the familiar sound of those acts into something utterly their own, robust, sharp and brutal. Their debut release Romeo KO and a blistering series of gigs with fellow destroyers Noxagt paved the way for Rorhat, their first full-length album and a record that reveals a band already devastatingly accomplished in their dark arts. One enthusiastic reviewer talked of the band’s “tremendous sense of urgency and abandon - notes aren’t so much played as beaten remorselessly – and a near constant bedrock of furiously distorted grooves... Volt are great. Shockingly great." Let’s hope the residents of Chemnitz up their procreation rate, because the results so far have been fearsomely good.
