Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

good work! and great you found out - 21/04/80 Albert Hall, Sterling (StIrling BTW) as that was the first time I saw them. Support acts were Poisons and my mate's band, Spiked Copy. It was reviewed in either Sounds or NME, with a photo of their singer, Pogo which made him quite the celeb about town. think the photographer got him mixed up with Steve Igs as they did looked pretty similar and both wore harringtons. I remember that as the next week EVERYONE seemed to be wearing them! Crass singer = fashion icon wink)

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

Well done, must have taken you ages to sort out. Crass played a gig at Maryport in Cumbria 79 think it was either june or July. Was at the Carlisle gig and the 3 Cleatermoor gigs. Wouldn't you have thought Crass themselves would have a gig's played list.

Thanks Riot.

Yep, too much time on my hands!
This should keep us going for a while...
No doubt errors here but just use this list as a starting point - add and correct where possible.

All the best.

CRASS LIVE:

??/??/77    Huntley Street, London
16/11/77    Action Space Drill Hall, London

29/09/78    Acklam, Hall, London
22/11/78    Paradiso, Amsterdam, Holland
23/11/78    ?, Dusseldorf, Germany

??/01/79    The Factory, Manchester

The book _The Story of Crass_ says the band actually played some gigs in the US, in NYC, in 1978 or 79, no? I was stunned when I read this in Berger's book the 1st time.

Gee Vaucher (from the book, page 93): "I avoided booking the obvious. I said I'm not going to book CBGB's or Max's Kansas City. I booked the Puerto Rican Club and the Polish Club. We did the Puerto Rican Club with James Chance and the Contortions."

[...]

On page 94, in 1978--

Artist Anthony Maccall recalls seeing Crass "in Manhattan -- in SoHo somewhere, I think. I was bowled over by velocity of the music and the no-kidding seriousness of their stage persona. They lined up across the front of the stage in black uniforms with Crass armbands and the Crass logo banner behind them and you were hit by this angry, sonic blitzkrieg whichc ontinued for the duration of the performance without a break."

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

Great to see the Gala Ballroom in Norwich on that list, very memorable night. The place was rammed with people. They played Norwich once before that though at the UEA Barn (1980?), they turned up unannounced as support to Poison Girls, great gig again but the crowd was a bit thin on the ground that night. They also did a gig in Bury St Edmunds around 81, can't for the life of me remember the venue. It all kicked off outside though with the local biker crowd......

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

Yeah, I was going to mention the Stroud gig too. Also that month June 1980 was Stonehenge on the 21st. Also I've got Liverpool - New Erics down for the 26th.

Penny and I were talking a few years ago, remembering lots of gigs and wishing there was a list. Andy Palmer used to handle that side of things and took the book with him down to the West country. Wonder if he still has it?

Nice to see the Rochdale gig from 1980 on there. That was the night Ian Asbury nearly burned my squat down and had the street crawling with police and firemen. Wonder what became of that silly twonk?

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

I saw them in a Church/Village Hall at Dunnington just outside of Worthing I'd guess it was '82 but definitely after the Brighton Concorde gig because I remember being gutted that I missed that one. I wasn't in Barnsley then!

The whole Crass anarcho-punk 'thing' meant so much to me growing up. The Pistols may have kicked off some early rebellion in an eleven year old but Feeding to a 14 year old actually mattered.  Some people actually cared. And still do.

Keep going. Great forum.   Cheers. xx

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

Hello to everybody - I liked this thread so much that I thought I would take the plunge and make my first posting.

Good move riot 100 - It seems that we all dig ephemera - I thought that it would be a challenge to come up with a piece for each gig - a bit of a long shot I know. Anyway, to get the ball rolling, here are a couple of pieces: Bradford Queens Hall poster and a ticket from the Hebden Bridge Trades Club:

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg11 … ticket.jpg

http://i246.photobucket.com/albums/gg11 … poster.jpg

I have an A3 poster from the Bradford Sweatbox gig - a nice one that - I will scan and post at a later date.

That was my 17th birthday! That day I went to see Robert calvert (Hawkwind) and Daevid Allen (Gong) doing poetyr readings at battersea Town hall (I think). Daevid Allen was doing another gig later that evening in Camden with Here & Now and offered me and my mate martin a lift in his car to the gig, but we thought he was joking so went home...  I also got my next door neighbour to tape a Derek Bailey concert broadcast on radio 3 the same evening...

Re: Crass Spotters of The World Unite...

I'm fairly sure that Wapping Autonmoy Centre gig was Dec 18th 1981, they played under the name of 'Shaved Women' (doing a bit of a Pistols 'SPOTS' thing I think, but I don't think many were fooled..) Main reason i remember the date is that I mentioned to Penny at the Zig zag that it had been exactly one year earlier they've played Wapping...
